Preparing Your Head, Heart & Hands

Jesus loved crowds, but He didn’t flatter them. In Luke 14:25–33, He turns to the people eagerly following Him and says something surprising: “Count the cost.” Not to discourage them — but to help them prepare. Following Him isn’t a last-minute decision. It’s an intentional one.

And preparation doesn’t start with decorations or the perfect playlist.
It starts inside of us — in our heads, hearts, and hands.

Head: Preparing What We Think

Jesus invites us to think carefully about what it means to follow Him. Faith isn’t guessing. It isn’t wishful thinking. It’s thoughtful trust — considering the cost and choosing Him anyway.

Our thoughts shape who we’re becoming.
Whatever we give attention to… grows.

“We fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen.” — 2 Corinthians 4:18

Holiday distractions come marching in like toy soldiers: gifts, events, travel, busyness. All good things — unless they pull our attention away from the One all this is about. If we want to follow Jesus, He must be a part of our everyday thoughts.

Fill your mind with what is true, noble, pure, and lovely (Philippians 4:8).
Prepare your head by focusing on Jesus first.

Heart: Preparing What We Love

Jesus uses strong words about where our affections go. Not because He wants to steal love from us — but because He wants us to experience love in its fullest form. Our hearts drive our decisions.

“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” — Proverbs 4:23

If anything takes first place in our loves — a relationship, success, comfort — that thing becomes our god. And gods that aren’t God always let us down.

Jesus will not settle for being an accessory to our lives.
He came to be King, not a seasonal decoration.

I’ll be honest: this is where I struggle most. I love my people. I love feeling secure. But Advent reminds me — when Jesus has first place in my heart, everything and everyone else is loved better.

Prepare your heart by making room for Him.

Hands: Preparing How We Live

Jesus told His followers to be dressed, alert, and actively serving (Luke 12:35–40). Ready doesn’t mean standing around — it means living like He’s coming.

One of the best ways to experience Jesus this season?
Serve someone. Give generously. Love practically.

Service shifts our focus from:

  • “What do I need?”

  • to “What can I give?”

Christmas becomes more meaningful when our hands move in love.

The Invitation

So let’s pause…

Where is your head right now?
What captures your attention?

Where is your heart?
What or who holds your deepest affection?

Where are your hands busy?
Are you living fully awake and ready?

Most of us have one of those areas that needs work. That’s okay. Advent isn’t about perfection — it’s about preparation.

If you want to truly experience hope, love, joy, and peace this Christmas…
if you truly want to meet Jesus…
prepare yourself.

Give Him your attention.
Give Him your affection.
Give Him your action.

Because when Jesus arrives, He never leaves things the same.
